Nature trails : Yeoor
Hills, also known as Mama Bhanja Hills, is a group
of picturesque hills in Thane. It is an unspoiled
and pollution free area, carpeted by natural foliage
and fauna. Yeoor Hills is home to about 78 known species
of birds and about 12 different species of animals.
Besides, it has the highest density of leopards in
India. The prime attraction here is the 150-year-old
holy shrine of Mama Bhanja. The
2-3 hour jungle walk takes you through the mixed evergreen
forest with 1000 types of plants (800-flowering &
200-non flowering), many of which are of medicinal
value. This is a perfect habitat for the Leopard and
the rare Rusty spotted cat, the smallest deer - Mouse
deer, the biggest moth the Atlas Moth, the biggest
butterfly Blue Mormon and the smallest butterfly the
Grass jewel. State flower of Maharashtra - Jarul or
Queens flower are also seen here.
For
groups of more than 15, we can arrange for a naturalist/field
expert to accompany you to explain the bio-diversity
of Yeoor Hills.
Bird watching :
With more than 78 documented bird species, this is
a bird watcher’s destination. Sightings include
the omnipotent Crested Serpent Eagle, the mimickers
such as the Gold-fronted Leaf Bird and the Lustrous
Spangled Drongo; also seen are the smallest bird in
India the Pale-billed Flower-pecker (not bigger than
your thumb). Migrants such as the Blyth’s Leaf
Warbler, the Black-eared Kite in all its splendour
are sighted and even the Rufous Woodpecker drumming
on the bark of the tree is heard.
Breakfast with Butterflies :
The
best time for this program is post monsoons when the
brightly coloured winged beauties, the butterflies
of India, emerge from thin air and adorn the plants.
Post monsoon, the adults of most of the species begin
to break free from their pupae and go about in search
of food and a mate. This area is home to 150 different
species of butterflies of the 1500 species found in
India, which is greater than the number of butterflies
found in the United Kingdom. If you're lucky, you
could also spot the largest butterfly in the state
of Maharashtra the Blue Mormon and the smallest butterfly
in India, the grass jewel. When
the sun shines brightly to generate heat of a specific
temperature and the appropriate flowers bloom all
over, we can see the butterflies enjoy their freedom
after a long period of containment as they bob from
one flower to the other. In
this program we unravel the mysteries of their migration
and life cycle and understand how these two activities
are governed to some extent by the availability of
its food.

Pottery making and Warli paintings |
|
Although
pottery is one of the oldest art-forms known to man-kind,
it has lately emerged as a form of therapy for those
suffering from anxiety and stress. We offer wiery
city folk the opportunity to loosen up, get closer
to mother Earth, and get their hands dirty in a bit
of clay.
Those with a more artistic bend of mind might also
decorate their earthen-ware with Warli art. Warli
art comes from tribals living in Thane-Yeoor region.
For large groups, we can arrange for Mr Satish Joshi,
a noted artist in this field, to take workshops on
Pottery and Warli art. |
